This book grew out of my interest with the growing popularity of emoticons and how they are used as visual representations of emotions in the digital culture. However, because they are so ubiquitous and so devoid of nuance it is nearly impossible to use them as a serious way of communicating feelings. I find the best ones are playful and used as a way of injecting color into a conversation.
